Tumba Art: Lighting up Homes with Chhatisgarh’s Traditional Touch

Tumba Art, also known as Tuma Art, originating from the Bastar region in Chhattisgarh, is a remarkably distinctive art form. This art form involves the use of dried gourds, including bottle gourds and pumpkins. The gourds are left to dry completely for several days. They are then polished with mud and soaked in water for a few hours. This helps to remove all the extra portion leaving the core shape of the gourd intact.

Earlier the gourds were repurposed as vessels for storing water by the tribes. Today, skilled artisans carve intricate designs onto the surface of these gourds using hot pointed iron sticks or knives, enhancing their aesthetic appeal.
