Between the Chaupads: Walking Through Jaipur’s Living Heritage

I had the wonderful opportunity to join the Jaipur Heritage Walk Tour, organised as part of the experiences offered to delegates at the Rajasthan Domestic Travel Mart.

The walk, titled “Between the Chaupads,” gave us a chance to discover some of Jaipur’s lesser-known gems. Curated between the Choti Chaupad and Badi Chaupad, the walk highlighted the city’s original foundation plan, its ornate temples, diverse architectural styles, and the ingenious water systems connected with the Chaupads.

Our guide, Yashasvi, led the walk with great passion and deep knowledge about the city, having curated several different kinds of walks across Jaipur.

We began early at 7 am from Choti Chaupad. Along the way, Yashasvi explained the significance of Araish and Aala-Geela work found on the walls of temples and heritage structures. As we strolled towards Tripolia Bazaar, she drew our attention to details of Jaipur’s architectural vocabulary—such as the Khangura, a continuous ornamental border pattern adorning grills, parapets, jharokhas, and terrace edges. She also spoke about the iconic Swargasuli Tower, once the tallest standing structure in old Jaipur.

The walk concluded at the Tripolia Bazaar Gate, but no Jaipur experience is complete without its food. We headed straight to the popular Samrat for a plate of piping hot Pyaaz Kachori paired with steaming chai—a delicious finale to a heritage walk that made for a perfect start to the day and a memorable introduction to Jaipur.
